How the final price is calculated
- First discount: price ร (1 โ first discount %).
- Extra coupon: that result ร (1 โ coupon %).
- Sales tax: the discounted price ร tax rate, added on top.
Final price = price ร (1 โ dโ) ร (1 โ dโ) ร (1 + tax)
Worked example: $120.00 item, 40% off, extra 15% coupon, 7.25% tax
- After 40% off: $72.00
- After the extra 15%: $61.20
- Sales tax: $4.44
- You pay: $65.64
- You save $58.80 before tax, an effective 49% off.
What two stacked discounts really add up to
| First discount | Extra discount | Looks like | Actually is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20% | 10% | 30% | 28% |
| 25% | 15% | 40% | 36.3% |
| 30% | 20% | 50% | 44% |
| 40% | 15% | 55% | 49% |
| 50% | 20% | 70% | 60% |
| 50% | 50% | 100% | 75% |
Shopping tips
- Compare the final price, not the percentage. 30% off a higher list price can cost more than 20% off elsewhere.
- A dollar-off coupon is worth more on a cheaper item. $10 off $40 is 25%; $10 off $100 is 10%.
- Check whether "up to" applies. "Up to 60% off" may cover only a few items.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percent discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the amount off, then subtract it. For 30% off $80: $80 ร 0.30 = $24 off, so the sale price is $56.
How do stacked discounts work?
The second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original. 40% off followed by 15% off equals 49% off in total, not 55%.
Does the order of the discounts matter?
For percentage discounts, no. 40% then 15% gives the same price as 15% then 40%. Order does matter when one of them is a fixed dollar amount.
Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?
Store discounts and store coupons reduce the taxable price in nearly every state, so tax is charged on the discounted amount. Manufacturer coupons are treated differently in some states.
