Simple percentage math; tipping ranges are US customs, not rules. Last reviewed October 4, 2026. Sources ยท Methodology
- 15%: Minimal standard service in sit-down diners.
- 18% โ 20%: Standard US restaurant service.
- 22% โ 25%: Exceptional service or large party dining.
- Food Delivery (DoorDash/UberEats): $4โ$6 minimum or 15โ20% whichever is higher.
How the tip is calculated
Tip = bill ร tip % ยท Total = bill + tip ยท Each person = total รท people
Pick a preset or type any percentage. The split divides both the bill and the tip evenly.
Worked example: $80.00 bill split four ways
| Tip rate | Tip | Total | Each person pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15% | $12.00 | $92.00 | $23.00 |
| 18% | $14.40 | $94.40 | $23.60 |
| 20% | $16.00 | $96.00 | $24.00 |
| 25% | $20.00 | $100.00 | $25.00 |
Quick mental math for tips
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left. $80.00 becomes $8.00.
- 20%: double the 10% figure. $16.00.
- 15%: take 10% and add half of it. $8.00 + $4.00 = $12.00.
- 18%: take 20% and subtract a tenth of it. $16.00 โ $1.60 = $14.40.

Why tipping matters in the US
Under federal law, employers may pay tipped workers a lower cash wage as long as tips bring total pay up to at least the regular minimum wage. Many states set a higher tipped wage or do not allow a lower one at all. In states that follow the federal rule, tips make up a large share of a server's income.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?
For table service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range, with more for excellent service. Many diners now treat 18% to 20% as standard.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common and simply results in a slightly larger tip.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Set the number of people in the calculator and it shows each person's share.
How much should I tip for delivery?
A common guideline is 15% to 20% of the order, with a few dollars as a minimum for small orders, and more for bad weather or long distances.
Is a tip required if a service charge is already on the bill?
An automatic gratuity or service charge often replaces the tip, especially for large parties. Check the bill and ask if you are unsure where the charge goes.
